Lance Selects SouthWood to Replace Iconic Sign with Fresh New Look

April 5, 2010

CHARLOTTE — After a half century on the face of the Lance building on South Boulevard, the huge sign that was the iconic symbol of Charlotte’s favorite snack food producer needed to be replaced. So Lance turned to another long-time Charlotte business — image, identity and signage specialists, SouthWood Corporation.

Lance, which manufactures and markets snack foods throughout much of the United States and other parts of North America, had recently adopted an updated logo. The old sign was in disrepair and the timing was right to replace it with a new sign of the updated logo, sending the same message of commitment to quality, innovation and freshness that Lance sends in its snacks. But the project would require a high level of expertise because of the sheer size of the sign — 25 feet wide and 25 feet tall — and the high mounting location.

Founded in 1970, SouthWood (www.southwoodcorp.com) applied their experience in designing, planning, building, installing and managing signage projects to meet the challenge.

“The sign was to be mounted above the roof of one building, high up on the side of an adjoining wall. It couldn’t be done from the ground with a crane. It had to be serviced from a swing stage, which is a scaffold platform that suspends from the roof line of the building,” says Ernest Dwight, president of SouthWood. “Because it was so large, the sign had to be fabricated in pieces. It was manufactured, disassembled, transported to the site and then reassembled like a jigsaw puzzle onto the building wall. And it had to be designed and built with no exposed hardware to mar the clean appearance of the logo.”

The new logo is now in place and remains a highly visible and prominent presence along South Boulevard. “The new sign supports our new brand identity while maintaining our heritage,” says David V. Singer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lance, Inc.
